The Illinois River Natural scenic area is located in the upper 70 miles of the river. Noted for its beauty, the Illinois River is nestled in the heart of the Oklahoma Ozarks with their ever changing oak-hickory forest. The upper river is an easy flowing river with delightful scenery and several stretches of mild rapids. There is excellent fishing for smallmouth and largemouth bass, channel and flathead catfish, walleye, and various sunfishes. Floaters can enjoy 70 miles of interesting and a sometimes challenging river. There are a number of canoe liveries along SH 10 North.
